Dr. Tara Thompson, PharmD., FAPC
On August 3, the Houston community was given the gift of community health education to adults and kids alike by some very eager young scholars.
In kicking off the upcoming school year, student pharmacists of the University of Houston College of Pharmacy (UHCOP) came together in support of efforts by Mayor John Whitmire in providing elementary students with educational health activities. Adults were also given the opportunity to participate in health screenings. This event was an excellent opportunity to uplift health knowledge in Houston to improve decision-making across all ages.
Empowering Houston with Health Education
Students were especially proud of their hard work in that the UHCOP's American Pharmacist Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) helped to coordinate the event with faculty advisors in conjunction with the APhA-ASP Operation Reproductive Health (previously known as the Women’s Health Campaign).
Promoting Reproductive Health Awareness in the Community
Operation Reproductive Health is an initiative focused on encouraging student pharmacists to reach out to their communities to provide health and wellness services with a focus on improving cancer prevention through Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Students participating in the initiative are also tasked with providing education to improve general reproductive and sexual health across the community.
Through the students’ efforts towards generating public awareness, engaging in community outreach, and delivering patient education on reproductive health and cancer prevention strategies, chapters have empowered more patients to take control of their own reproductive health.
UHCOP Students' Involvement
- Emphasized to parents the importance of providing their children with back-to-school survival kits. These kits include deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and hand sanitizer, among other items. Revelation Pharma generously provided some of the supplies for the kits.
- Stressed the importance of good hygiene to kids so they can make better informed decisions in tandem with the support of their parents.
The Houston community can count on UHCOP students to continue their support in spreading health education to kids and adults alike!
